Pricing photography lessons is always tricky, but I know from experience working with McGregor Summer/Winter School that the current pay rate for a tutor is $47.50 per hour. On that basis, I charge $43.50 per hour to help cover travel time and petrol, printing notes and complimentary coffee for students on arrival.

Frankly, I get rewarded by seeing students learn to use their cameras correctly and achieve rewarding results. To make a little money along the way is a bonus to me! Perhaps that’s not what my accountant thinks, but that’s the way I like it.

Remember, you can always break up your lesson if time allows, or do it in one go (3 hours) if that suits you best. Some students find that two hours of theory is enough for one day and are happy to return later to complete the practical side of the course.
